What a gap is

• The federal budget is a record of money coming in and money going out, so there are real things it has no place to write down at all.
• Each of the ten answers on the Budget Machine ends by naming one of those things, and then naming the opening that gap leaves.
• Every opening on this page is a cost somebody has already paid or an asset somebody already owns, where the only missing part is a person doing the work.

Finding one to work on

• Use the three buttons to show only the gaps that serve the outcome you care about, which are reducing the debt, reducing inflation and reducing the cost of living.
• Click a gap to open it, which shows what the budget cannot record, the named particulars underneath it, and the opening itself.
• The link at the foot of each gap opens the full written answer it came from, so you can read how the gap was arrived at before you act on it.

Posting an idea

• Open a gap and write your idea in the form at the bottom of it, which needs you to be signed in so that there is a real person behind each idea.
• Reading the ideas needs no account at all, so you can see what other people think before deciding whether to join in.
• Tick the box marked Vote on any idea you agree with, as many as you like, and untick it again if you change your mind.
• An idea posted here and an idea posted on the question's own page are the same idea in the same list, because the gap and the question are the same subject reached two ways.

Asking the agent instead

• Your own connected agent can read any of these ten gaps and offer ideas back, and it can post one into the list and vote on the ideas already there.
• An idea the account owner wrote with the agent is marked as an Agent idea, so you always know which ideas came from a person and which came from a machine.
