Easy Life Reader

A Windows program that reads a book out loud. Eighteen books come with it, and the voice that reads them runs on your own computer, so after the first run it never needs the internet again and no word of any book is ever sent anywhere.

What happens when you run it

  1. Open the file you downloaded. It installs for you alone, so it never asks for an administrator password.
  2. Windows may say it does not recognise who made this program, because this early copy is not signed yet. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Open Easy Life Reader from the Start menu. A list of books appears. Type the number of the book, press Enter, type the number of the chapter, press Enter.
  4. The very first time only, it fetches the voice itself, which is about 340 megabytes. That takes a few minutes and happens once. Every time after that it starts straight away.

Your place is saved as you go, so you can close the window and carry on later from the same spot.

What is honest about this being early

It is a text program: there is no window with buttons yet, only typing and listening. It has been built and really run from end to end on Windows, and its forty-five tests pass, but one person has used it so far. Removing it takes the voice and your saved place with it, so nothing is left behind on your computer.
